10 Baby Essentials I Actually Used (and Loved)

Mom with newborn baby surrounded by everyday baby essentials she actually used and loved during the first weeks.

Before your baby arrives, it can suddenly feel like you’re standing in the middle of an endless baby store — where everything is labeled essential, must-have, and absolutely impossible to live without. The list of baby gear and care products can quickly become overwhelming, especially when you’re a first-time parent trying to navigate the world of baby essentials. Honestly? It’s incredibly easy to get lost.

When you haven’t lived through those early weeks yet, it’s hard to tell which items will truly make everyday life easier — and which ones just look good on a marketing checklist. In the beginning, you want to do everything “right,” even though you don’t yet know what your baby (and you) will actually need.

That’s why I want to share the 10 baby items we truly used — and genuinely loved. This is very intentionally not a “top 10 must-have baby essentials” list. Because I strongly believe there’s no universal rule. Every baby is different, every family is different, and so much depends on your baby’s temperament and your own parenting approach.

This list isn’t based on trends or sponsored recommendations. I ranked these baby essentials by daily usability, how much they reduced the mental and physical load on us as parents, and how comfortable they were for our baby — not by what shows up on generic “must-have” lists. Think of this as a gentle guide, not a rulebook. I hope it brings you a little clarity — and maybe even some reassurance — as you navigate the overwhelming world of baby essentials.

What Most Parents Consider the True Basics

In my experience, when it comes to buying baby gear, the solution isn’t found in expensive gadgets or trendy tech — it’s in a few essential items you simply can’t start without.

A safe sleep space is one of them, whether that’s a crib, bassinet, or bedside sleeper. Add a few changes of soft sleepers or onesies, plenty of diapers and wipes (because you truly can’t have enough of those in the beginning), and a reliable, safe car seat. These are the baby essentials used every single day — often multiple times a day.

A stroller and a well-organized, practical diaper bag also fall into this category. Not as fashion statements, but as everyday tools that make it possible to move through daily life with your baby safely, calmly, and with everything you need at hand — whether you’re heading out for a short walk or a longer trip.

The focus is rarely on quantity, and almost always on usability. Is it easy to clean? Can you grab it quickly in the middle of the night? Does it reduce stress in exhausted moments? These are the questions that truly matter when choosing baby essentials that support real life with a newborn.

The Everyday “Lifelines”

Looking back on those first weeks, there are a few items that truly earned their place in our daily lives. These weren’t flashy or trendy baby products, but quiet helpers — tools that made everyday life easier again and again.

Sound machines are a perfect example. Not because they magically put every baby to sleep, but because they help create a consistent, calming sleep environment. Over time, they become a clear signal for your baby: it’s time to rest. I honestly think the secret lies somewhere in the Pavlovian reflex — and yes, it definitely works on humans too, not just dogs.

Equally essential were good-quality blankets and sleep sacks, along with clothing that clearly had real parents in mind during the design process. Magnetic closures or two-way zipper sleepers, for example, quite literally saved my nerves during nighttime diaper changes.

Diaper Bag

The diaper bag is one of those items whose importance you rarely realize in advance. During pregnancy, it barely crossed my mind how essential it would become. We received ours as a gift, and now life without it feels unimaginable. It comes with us whether we’re stepping out for just half an hour or heading off on a longer trip.

Thanks to its well-designed compartments, everything is easy to find, and it’s honestly impressive how much it can hold — including basic hygiene items like a thermometer, nail clippers, or a nasal aspirator.

Breast Pump

The breast pump wasn’t something I used every single day, yet it played a crucial role. During my hospital stay, when I was still struggling with breastfeeding, it helped stimulate milk production. Later on, it became an important tool in preventing engorgement and mastitis—something I unfortunately experienced firsthand, multiple times, with a 104°F fever. It also gave me peace of mind to be able to pump milk in advance.

If we went somewhere, or grandma or dad watched the baby while I was away, I knew our baby would still have something to eat. That naturally meant investing in a good-quality bottle as well, so our baby could learn to feed both from the breast and from a bottle.

Stretchy Baby Wrap

The stretchy baby wrap turned out to be a true miracle for us. In those early weeks, when your baby wants to be close to you almost constantly, it’s an enormous help not to be stuck on the couch all day. You can move, get things done, and stay active while your baby is safely snuggled close. I even worked out while wearing it — surprisingly effective and incredibly practical.

Nasal Aspirator

The nasal aspirator hardly needs an explanation. Almost every baby household has one, and during colds or flu season, it’s truly indispensable.

Baby Nest

The baby nest was only part of our routine for a short time, but we loved it while it lasted. During the day, our baby slept in it in the living room, close to me, while I could still go about my day. Most experienced parents recommend choosing a larger size so it can be used longer.

Video Baby Monitor

The video baby monitor still gives me a sense of security to this day. Being able to see and hear my baby while they slept made a huge difference. I could tell right away when they started stirring and often got to them before they fully woke up.

We always took it with us when traveling. And yes—I’ll admit it—it’s still in their room today. If something’s wrong, that’s how they “wake us up.” We just don’t use the camera function anymore.

Activity Play Mat with Arch

The activity play mat with an arch also got a lot of use in our home. The hanging toys encourage movement, strengthen muscles, and support the development of coordination. It made tummy time much easier and more enjoyable, which is especially important from the very beginning, as it helps strengthen the head, neck, and shoulder muscles.

Our baby spent a lot of time on it, smiling at the dangling toys while doing some surprisingly serious workouts.

Nursing Pillow

The nursing pillow was already a big help during pregnancy, easing back and lower-back pain. After birth, it became an almost constant companion during feeding sessions. It provided comfort for both my baby and me — which really matters when you consider how much of those early weeks are spent feeding.

Finding Balance Between Overbuying and Minimalism

Experienced parents almost unanimously say the same thing: with your first baby, you tend to buy everything.

Over time, you realize that your baby actually uses fewer items — but the right, well-chosen baby essentials. The best starting point is always your real life.

How big is your home? How much time do you spend on the go? Do you prefer babywearing or using a stroller?

Are you considering co-sleeping? Leaving some flexibility and **buying extras later—intentionally and as needed—**often makes far more sense than trying to prepare for everything in advance.

Final Thoughts

When it comes to baby gear, marketing is loud — but experience is quiet and honest. The best baby essentials aren’t always the most eye-catching ones. They’re the items that provide safety, reduce daily stress, and adapt to real life with a baby.
